Anwar acquittal boosts case for early Malaysia election

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 — Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak may call elections as early as March to stay ahead of a weakening economy and dissension within his own party made worse by yesterday’s acquittal of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. It will pit the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) that has ruled since independence in 1957, against Anwar and his promise of sweeping reform, including scrapping a system that gives Malays preference over ethnic Chinese and Indians and which many contend is holding back the Southeast Asian nation.
“The focus is not so much on Anwar now but on Najib. He has to move on and keep Umno loyal to him,” said a senior Umno official who is involved in party leadership discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

ASEAN group hopes Anwar acquittal leads to greater democracy, electoral reforms

ASEAN group hopes Anwar acquittal leads to greater democracy, electoral reforms
The chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with the ASEAN States, Dr Thomas Gambke, who supports the Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim under the "Parliamentarians Protect Parliamentarians" programme, has issued the following statement on behalf of the executive committee of the parliamentary friendship group:
"We welcome the acquittal of the Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. We hope that this will be an important signal to further democratization of Malaysia. Anwar Ibrahim was accused of sodomy. In case of conviction he would have faced up to 20 years of detention. The trial was suspected to be politically motivated to remove an inconvenient opponent.

What the 901 verdict really proved

Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad

JAN 10 — When I wrote about how “The law has truly become an ass” back in February 2010 on the battle of the two mentris besar in the Perak power grab impasse, I meant it.
I was totally disgusted and appalled by the apex court finally returning a verdict of 5-0 in favour of Zambry Abdul Kadir over Nizar Jamaluddin, and whatever little regard I had for the judiciary entirely dissipated with that decision. It has never recovered since.
The High Court’s acquittal of former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday has not changed my opinion of the judiciary either. And it’s not just about being a sceptic as the saying “a swallow doesn’t make a summer” suggests. It’s also not about the presiding judge not dismissing this frivolous case from the outset.
Lest you’re still wondering about my despondency and disdain for the judiciary, it’s all about the extreme humiliation we are subjected to as the country is being given global real-time coverage by CNN and Al-Jazeera, et al... all because of Malaysia’s obsession with someone’s anal virginity.

Letupan Di Himpunan 901: Polis Perlu Siasat Segera
