Melayu Perlu Bebaskan Minda Daripada Belenggu Umno-BN

Ismail takes over from Musa as new IGP

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 1 - Tan Sri Ismail Omar will replace Tan Sri Musa Hassan as the country’s new Inspector-General of Police, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein announced today.

Ismail, who is currently the deputy IGP, will assume his new post on September 13.

Musa, who had his contract extended twice, leaves under a cloud as he had come into office with a Mr Clean reputation but now leaves amid allegations of wrongdoing.

The police force under Musa is also seen now as ineffective and demoralised.

“Today, I would like to announce that the period of contract for Tan Sri Musa as the Inspector-General of Police will end on September 12 and therefore Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar has been recommended as the new police chief,” Hishammuddin told reporters during a press conference here.

He added that Internal Security and Public Order Director Commissioner Datuk Hussin Ismail would be the new deputy IGP.

Hishammuddin denied Musa’s contract was not renewed due to public pressure and expressed hope that Musa would still be able to contribute to the police after retirement.

“Of course, nothing to do at all (with outside pressure). I think it is a continuity and struggle that we have to carry all our life. Because as you see Tan Sri Musa has been serving for 41 years and we cannot expect him to carry the responsibility. We have to find ways in which he can continue to contribute,” he said.

Musa, 59, reached retirement age in 2007 but had his tenure extended twice.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers have demanded that Musa step down as IGP, claiming that crime and corruption had escalated under his watch.

However Musa stressed that he had never felt disappointed during his tenure as the police chief.

“I never felt disappointed with the police and I have given everything to the police force. It is time for me to step down because of my age. I have also trained my deputy Tan Sri Ismail Omar and I hope Tan Sri Ismail Omar will ensure continuity in the police leadership to make the force better and plans that have been implemented should be continued,” said Musa.

Musa advised his successor to ensure the police fulfill its duties and regain public confidence.

“I advise the police force should be taken care of because we need the police to take care of the country. Therefore the police must be right in fulfilling its duties and get the confidence of the public. That is all I ask,” he said.

Musa said his greatest challenge as the IGP was to make strong and honest decisions without fear or favour.

“It is always a challenge to be an IGP. You have to be strong to face these challenges and as long we are sincere in our duties then we don’t have to be scared with anybody. I feel that I faced all of these challenges with sincerity. We must be true in what we say and not hide because then the people will not believe us,” he said.

Reports over Musa’s retirement came into the forefront after suspended Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Yusoff was acquitted of three corruption charges by the Sessions Court in March.

During Ramli’s trial in Kota Kinabalu, Musa had been described by a Sessions Court judge as an unreliable witness.

Ramli’s acquittal had sparked intense speculation surrounding his future because his relationship with Musa is understood to have been soured by events leading up to his prosecution.

A number of uncorroborated reports had also emerged on the Internet in recent years alleging the involvement of the criminal underworld leading up to Ramli being charged with corruption.

Ismail said today that he was grateful to Musa and would continue to listen to his opinions.

“I feel that I am blessed to have been able to work with Tan Sri Musa and I will continue to take note of his opinions to continue developing the police force and provide the best service to the public,” he said.

Melaka tangguh buka sekolah remaja hamil

Sejak Azali, Hiburan Akhirnya Di Jadikan Penyeri Program Berbuka Puasa Anjuran UMNO!

Hello institutional reforms, lu pi main jauh-jauh dulu la!

Aku dah sebut banyak kali dah. Umno akan terus perintah. Umno bersungguh. Sejak selepas pilihan raya umum 8/3/08, Umno begitu istiqamah dengan ketagihannya mencetuskan api perkauman. Hasilnya dah mula nampak. Banyak Melayu yang berjaya ditongongkan. Nak marah? Nak marah apa? Depa buat kerja.

Selepas tengah hari tadi, saya baca berita Malaysian Insider bertajuk "Daftar pemilih: DAP masih di depan, Umno mula kejar", saya tak terkata apa-apa. Umno sedang mengejar rapat. Akhirnya pasti dia yang akan leading. Nak tak puas hati? Nak tak puas hati apa? Depa buat kerja.

Hoi! Berlambak-lambak lagi pemimpin Umno di semua peringkat yang tak habis lagi installment mahligai mewah, kereta mewah, macam-macam mewah lagi.

Kalau Umno kalah, sapa nak bayaq?! Hampa ingat depa nak jual mee bawah pokok?

Hello institutional reforms, lu pi main jauh-jauh dulu la!

Musa Hassan OUT Ismail Bakri IN

Rozali dicabar letak jawatan, tanding pilihan raya

IGP: Ismail Omar ganti Musa Hassan

Nota 'terakhir' Teoh dikemukakan 20 Sept

Corrupt, greedy leaders the bane of land settlers

By Jamilah Kamaruddin

PETALING JAYA: There is only a slight difference between the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra).
In Felcra settlements, the settlers own the land and not the government. Both entities aimed to alleviate the rural Malay economy.

But today the plight of Felcra settlers is much the same as their brethren in Felda schemes, according to the National Association for Children of Settlers (Anak) president Mazlan Aliman.

Felcra was set up in 1966, 10 years after Felda, with the aim of developing privately owned land in a bid to improve the status of the rural Malay community.

Felcra opened settlements and new plantations for those who did not have land.

In 1997, Felcra became Felcra Bhd, a wholly owned company belonging to the government.

After a while greed stepped in.

According to Mazlan, a majority of the village folk was being oppressed as a result of mismanagement and power abuse in Felcra.

Mazlan, who is also the chairman of PAS’ land and regional development territory bureau, recently disclosed 22 documents, complete with evidence, detailing alleged fraudulent acts involving Felcra.

He said the 22 cases were occurring simultaneously involving 90,000 settlers nationwide.

He alleged that among the fraud cases were swindling funds in the settlers’ cooperative, Koperasi Peserta-Perserta Felcra Bhd, a RM14.8 million contract on the Sarawak Felcra Jemoreng settlement, RM7 million purchase of bonds without the approvals of settlers and forging documents for general agricultural works in Sabah.

“In reality, Felcra participants face more serious issues than Felda settlers. The only thing is that the former did not know who to complain to,” said Mazlan.

Besides the 22 cases, he also alleged that he had ample proof of other cases of monetary abuse and will disclose them soon.

“It’s not just Felda and Felcra. There is mismanagement and abuse in Risda, Mida, UDA and other agencies.

“There could only be one reason for this (state of affair): corrupt government leaders who are only interested in raking in personal profits at the expense of the people,” he said.

Reject corrupt leaders
On the New Economic Model, Mazlan said the 30% equity could be achieved early “if and only if” the government is transparent and runs the land development agencies properly.

“There are several agencies involved in the development of millions of hectares of land worth billions of ringgit.

“If a land development agency established 50 years ago had been managed without corruption, Bumiputeras would have achieved the 30% equity by now,” he said.

“Extreme poverty would have been wiped out and the economic gap between the communities reduced.

“Unfortunately for the settlers... there are greedy and corrupt politicians who have and are still robbing the rakyat’s wealth.

“They have turned government agencies into their personal playground for amassing wealth and aiding their cronies.

“If this situation does not change and the culture of corruption continues, it will never be possible for Bumiputeras to move forward.

“We are a grateful people... we don’t want to forget the assistance the government has offered us… but the corrupt and greedy leaders have oppressed the rakyat to the point that we are now rejecting them,” said Mazlan.

The RPK blip, bleep and the Beeb

Shane Fuentes

raja-petra-hardtalk-2  The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was right to dismiss a HARDTalk non-interview with fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin (RPK) who fled to the United Kingdom from pending law suits in Malaysia. RPK’s mother is Welsh and in all probability he has British nationality and is immune from extradition to Malaysia.

The BBC researches many topics every month for not only HARDTalk but its variety of other programmes and not all make it to the air. This is similar to other media organizations that are swamped with news stories but not all are published. These organisations can’t be accused of blacking out the news that remains unpublished although this does happen but not with run-of-the-mill stuff which are also needed as fillers and the like.

Generally, media organisations try to follow a certain tried-and-tested formula in order to maintain their ratings viz 5 per cent excellent, 15 per cent good and the rest average. It’s not possible to have 100 per cent excellent all the time and even if it was possible, there’s no way any media organisation can maintain the momentum of such coverage for long.

The result is that when a media organisation drops from 100 per cent excellent to the usual formula, it will be very quickly noticed as having “dropped in standards”.

Consistency is also the name of the game as with any product.

Every tin of Milo, for example, is consistent in its contents i.e. in colour, texture, taste and a host of other criteria. How much quality can a big tin of Milo give for RM20 before running themselves out of the business?

The consistency approach can also be seen with fast food chains, brand names and even roadside mamak teh tarik stalls. A good teh tarik mamak knows what makes for a good cup of the brew that draws in the crowd. The proof of the pudding is in the eating which the bad establishments have yet to learn.

True, the BBC has even aired tyrants and dictators on HARDTalk and its many other programmes.

An example is former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. This does no discredit to the organisation since Mahathir is in a position to do enormous damage given his influence on the Malaysian government. Mahathir is one of those who can make a difference for the worse.

Similarly, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Anwar Ibrahim was aired to balance the Mahathir interview, whichever came first. Anwar can also make a difference either for the better or worse. So, he made the grade for a BBC interview.

There was also a need with Anwar to gauge how seriously the agenda for change and reform in Malaysia was proceeding given the ruling Barisan Nasional’s (BN) more than half-century grip on the country.

Besides, after leading the opposition alliance to victory with a five-state win in the last General Election in 2008, Anwar had something to tell. The fact that it could be a flash-in-the-pan which he achieved by jumping on Hindraf’s makkal sakthi (people power) phenomenon is beside the point.

An equally pertinent question to consider in the case of Anwar is the Law of Inertia: “A body at rest, tends to stay at rest, unless acted upon by external forces. A body at work, tends to stay at work, unless acted upon by external forces”.

We have to await the outcome of the next General Election in 2013 or earlier to see this law at work. In all probability, given the absence of external forces except for the minor sodomy II charge against Anwar, the status quo will remain in Malaysia with Perak even going back to the opposition alliance.

RPK, no matter how important in his estimation, is not even average. It would do no credit to the BBC to air someone like him and compromise their credibility for newsworthiness.

They went through their research proposal briefly and in the end wisely decided that they are not going to make any difference for the better or worse by having him on air. In all probability, he will just repeat his usual “Elvis is Still Alive” kind of outrage which merits, according to his claims, a considerable number of hits every month.

The trashy tabloids which thrive are similar to the RPK blog and have a tried and tested formula as well based on two maxims: mix a little truth with a lot of fiction to purely entertain; and tell a thousand other lies to cover the first lie. This is a never ending game as many bloggers like RPK have discovered to their eternal fascination and the horror of others.

RPK knows that he was never for a minute even considered for an interview for HARDTalk. But he latched on to a routine enquiry from BBC to spin the yarn that the Malaysian Government must have put the pressure on the world-famous British media organisation to drop the so-called interview. And so he has yet another fairy tale to spin for his gullible readers.

His readers plan to protest against the BBC, according to RPK’s own spin, as if that would make it “back down” on their non-decision on a non-issue. This is an organisation that has even thumbed its nose at British Government requests. So, no one for even a moment thinks that the BBC would entertain any interference from the small government of an increasingly weak country like Malaysia.

When RPK tried to desperately contact London-based Hindraf Makkal Sakthi chairman Waythamoorthy Ponnusamy, the latter was understandably very wary and kept a good distance from him. RPK used a go-between to get Waythamoorthy to see him but the latter rebuffed all attempts. Finally, RPK turned up one morning at Waythamoorthy’s door himself. He was virtually shown the door.

Subsequently, he went on a tirade against Hindraf, labeling it and the Ponnusamy brothers – including the elder Uthayakumar – as racists. Hindraf did not dignify RPK’s attacks with any rebuttal.

In a statement that make no reference whatsoever to RPK, Hindraf has explained that “a racist is one who denies other people their rights in the sun”.

In the case of Hindraf, it was further explained, the ad hoc apolitical movement was only fighting for the rights of the marginalized to have their place in the sun without depriving others, in the process, of their rights”.

Hindraf sees no need to speak up for others but to focus only on the plight of the marginalized. This has been latched on by RPK to label Hindraf in his blog as racist since “it doesn’t speak up for all but only one group”.

Is it any wonder therefore that the BBC has found RPK not newsworthy enough or credible to appear on its HARDTalk show?

RPK neither makes a difference for the better nor for worse. He’s in the non-news category. No news is bad news. Bad news is good news. When a dog bites a man, it’s not news. When a man bites a dog, it’s news.

It’s more likely that Hindraf’s Waythamoorthy will soon appear on a BBC show. Even hardcore Malay racists in Malaysia concede, albeit grudgingly, that Hindraf Makkal Sakthi makes a compelling case.

Zaid may seek PKR post after all

By G Vinod

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Zaid Ibrahim has indicated that he may change his mind and decide to contest in the upcoming party election.
Complaining bitterly about being the target of backbiters and calumniators in the party, he said he might seek a post in the party although he announced early last month that he was staying out of the polls.

He did not say which post he would go for, but hinted that it would be the deputy presidency.

Writing in his blog, he said he was shocked by the intensity of ill feeling against him.

“So I have made a new decision,” he said. “If they’re going to keep attacking me, I might as well enter the fray. As they say, if you’re going to get slapped anyway, you might as well make it worthwhile.”

But he said he would contest only if Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim “does not want that post”. Speculation is rife that Khalid may seek election as deputy president.

Zaid mentioned the party election only in the last two paragraphs of his blog entry, entitled Ibrahim Ali should engage in a dialogue.

The posting is Zaid’s tribute to Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar’s political acumen. He praised her for taking on the Malay rights group Perkasa and said she distinguished herself among Malay politicians for her willingness to think.

Yesterday, Nurul Izzah invited Perkasa to a public debate over Malay rights.

“However, as expected, Perkasa will not come for a debate and it has rejected her invitation,” Zaid wrote. “Perkasa is more interested in screaming and ranting about how Malays are losing everything.”

Spy cam: MB sets up internal task force

By Rahmah Ghazali
SHAH ALAM: Insisting that a police report is not necessary, Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim has instead set up an internal task force to investigate the mysterious spy camera that was discovered at his office recently.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a state executive council meeting today, Khalid said he had discussed with the state chief police officer on the matter.

“We have set up our own task force with police officers in it. Not only will it help the task force get to the bottom of the matter, the security of the administration in this office can also be beefed up,” he said.

It is learnt that the task force, which is headed by his newly-minted political secretary Faekah Hussin, will be communicating directly with chief police officer Khalid Abu Bakar.

When asked if one of the staff, rumoured to be behind the spy-camera incident, was transferred, Khalid dismissed it, saying: “No, there is no such thing.”

The spy-camera controversy, which surfaced recently, had triggered speculation that there is an attempt to topple Khalid's administration.

Although there is talk on the ground that it could be an inside job, the menteri besar had persistently refused to discuss “speculative elements”.

MB to declassify MPK audit report

On another matter, Khalid said that he would declassify the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) audit report, which falls under Official Secrets Act, after Hari Raya.

Last week, he said that there was “abuse of power” in the council in view of the support letter scandal involving state councillor Ronnie Liu and former councillor Tee Boon Hock.

“I have seen the final draft and I promise to release the report after Hari Raya,” he said.

On another issue, Khalid said the state government has yet to set guidelines for non-Muslims to enter mosques or suraus.

“We are aiming to have one system that could enhance participation between Muslims and non-Muslims.

Recently, state exco in charge of Islamic affairs portfolio Hasan Ali proposed a detailed guideline on etiquette that needs to be adhered to when entering mosques or suraus.

This comes in the wake of a controversial photo of MP Serdang Teo Nie Ching speaking at Surau Al-Huda in Kajang last week.

Umno claimed that it had sparked controversy and outrage among the Muslim community, including the Selangor Sultan. Teo has since apologised to the Sultan.

Pertahan hak Melayu-Islam

Keuntungan Koperasi Pembangunan Beris Berhad meningkat
SIK – Menteri Besar, YAB.

MEB Hanya Cantik Atas Kertas Kalau Terus Amalan Kronisme

"Khairy menyebut kerajaan Umno-BN mensasarkan pendapatan per kapita sebanyak AS$15,000 daripada angka semasa iaitu AS$7,000 ke AS$8,000.

Okay, forget meritocracy, but what about professionalism?

Ooi Kee Beng

Malaysia’s former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has been making a name for himself as a blogger after he retired in 2003. Perhaps because the man’s main concern is to be confrontational, and in the blogosphere the competition on that score is relentless, many of his entries have tested the boundaries of rationality. Very often, these are full of contradictions and are not worth commenting on.

However, a recent one where Dr Mahathir claims that proponents of meritocracy are as racists as anyone else does require a reaction.

For starters, just because most of us have racist tendencies does not make racism all right, especially in public policy. That point need not be belaboured.

It is also undeniable that political slogans always conceal a political agenda, and not always in an opaque manner either.

This goes for “Malaysian Malaysia” as much as it does for “Ketuanan Melayu”; and for “Middle Malaysia” as much as it does for “One Malaysia”.

However, that is not the real issue.

Although Dr Mahathir recognises that meritocracy, imposed without consideration for social inequalities, will merely favour those who are already privileged economically or otherwise, he does not draw the obvious conclusion that we are talking about a condition we may provocatively call a class struggle.

This brings us back to 1970. During the days when the New Economic Policy (NEP) was being drafted, it was obvious that the issue was poverty. The official insight gained from the May 13 riots was that the Malay community was not getting any richer despite independence.

After three elections, there were no signs that their lot would improve dramatically, and if that situation was not remedied, the country could not possibly enjoy political stability and economic growth.

And so, the attempt was made to remodel Malaysian society.

Once class inequalities were lessened, inter-ethnic tension would follow suit, and so the NEP would succeed by making race passé as a political tool. The poor had to be helped, and the Malays had to be helped. That was the dilemma, which had to be solved within the ultimate project of turning Malaysia into a prosperous and stable country.

Thus, three criteria for success competed with each other.

First, the lot of the Malay community as a whole had to improve dramatically. Second, the income gap among Malaysians as a whole must diminish. Third, the national economy as a whole must experience impressive economic growth.

Since the political structure had always been race-based, it was easy for the system to continue along those lines, and the implementation of the NEP favoured racial interests over class concerns. This created a system of patronage which over time encouraged mediocrity over excellence, quota strictness over merit, and political concerns over judicial correctness.

What is sad is that after 40 years of the NEP, it is still the racial aspect, now evolved into Malay Supremacy, which continues to be taken by Dr Mahathir and others as the most effective political tool at their disposal.

Other crucial values are overshadowed. The income gap, also within the Malay community, remains enormous, leading to a host of social problems that the country can do without, such as a low level of education, criminality, corruption and, worst of all, a sustained weakness for racial politics.

The only gap that seems to have lessened impressively is the one between party and state.

Malaysia may have managed relatively well economically, but the signs are now many that the goods times are over, and the developmental and resource edge that it had over most other Asian countries is now gone.

The rule of law, especially important in a country as heterogeneous as Malaysia, has been increasingly compromised, as has the quality of education in schools and universities. The key project of uniting the nation has also been disregarded other than in occasional sloganeering exercises.

Meritocratic values can no doubt be misused in the service of vested interests, but what a country with self-esteem and ambition cannot do without is professionalism, be this in the civil service, the education system, the police or the managerial and entrepreneurial classes.

As a result, governance in general has lost credibility and legitimacy. Indeed, the area where professionalism is most needed today is in governance.

"Jangan sampai masyarakat sivil mengambil tugas negara. Saya menolak kekerasan dalam apa-apa (bentuk) pun," katanya lagi ketika ditemui pemberita selepas pertemuan itu.

Salah Ke.. Kalau Kurang Ajar Kat Diorang...???

Mereka menjeritkan kata-kata "You Malaysia balik!"

Jurutera berusia 60 tahun itu bagaimanapun sempat menutup pintu banglonya sebelum batu berkenaan menghentam pintu tersebut. - Berita Hairan.

KJ upset with Namewee's You tak baca? Siapa buat M'sia kaya?

Malaysia's most famous rapper Namewee
Khairy Jamaluddin

Wee Meng Chee or Namewee's latest video should rightly offend all Malaysians who profess to be against racism. As I told the press yesterday, I believe this time, Namewee's insult was too blatant for anyone to ignore. He cannot continually be given a pass, and this latest stunt suggests he did not mean his apology to all Malaysians over the infamous "Negarakuku" video in 2007.

In that apology, Namewee also said, "As a Malaysian, I understand the sensitivities of each ethnic group and religion in the country" and that he learnt a “valuable lesson” on national unity and ethnic relations. Personally, I accepted the apology and wanted to draw a line under the whole incident. I met and acted with him in the short film “Meter”; I wanted to believe he was merely a naïve young man who meant no harm and that he had learnt from an honest mistake. After viewing his latest video, I no longer believe either of this to be true.

In that video aimed at the school principal Siti Inshah's alleged speech which contained insulting remarks about ethnic Chinese and Indians, Namewee bombarded viewers with vulgar, sexually suggestive lyrics and imagery unbecoming of any decent and respectful person. But that is the least of my concerns.

In the 'song', which begins with him colourfully expressing his disdain for racists, Namewee exposes himself as the racist when he says "You tak baca? Siapa buat Malaysia kaya?", the implication being that the Chinese are the reason for Malaysia’s prosperity and as such Malays like Siti Inshah have no business asking the Chinese to 'return' to China. The same message could have easily been conveyed by stating that no one should be telling anyone else to 'return' because Malaysia belongs to all its citizens without suggesting that a particular ethnic group has contributed more or less.

Now, my position on the Siti Inshah matter is crystal clear. If she did utter the words as claimed, she should be severely punished. But let there be no doubt, Namewee's insinuation that the Chinese are solely responsible for this country’s growth is just as blatantly offensive. Neither is it a question of Malays being too sensitive. Hurt and anger are to be expected when one community is essentially told they play a minimal role in this country's progress.

KJ's overt racism caused  Gerakan, MCA, MIC to fall in 2008

While this controversy is obviously racial in nature, the reaction to it does not have to be. Just as Namewee's video was the wrong response to the Siti Inshah issue, somewhere out there someone is saying that all Chinese should be eternally grateful to the Malays for granting them citizenship. He or she would be mistaken of course, but the point is we cannot allow disempathy to feed on itself. We cannot let this vicious cycle go on in perpetuity. We cannot play the game of the extremists and the racists on both sides of the spectrum if we are to forge a better path than what they offer.

As such, let this episode be not merely about Namewee, but also symptomatic of the challenge for moderate Malaysians, many of whom I have come to befriend in social media circles. The challenge I speak of is nothing more elaborate than that of consistency transcending racial or political affiliations. I am utterly against extremism, disempathy, insensitivity and racism of any kind - I have spoken out against the likes of Perkasa, Al-Islam magazine and Siti Inshah, often at great political risk. And today I am speaking out against Namewee, not because of his race, religion or even the probability that he will not vote Barisan Nasional. But because he was explicitly insulting. With consistency comes credibility, I have learnt that. And if you, too, call yourself a moderate Malaysian, this is your acid test.

Hassan Skodeng, Khalib dan Rosmah

Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh dilaporkan marah-marah kepada Hassan Skodeng (baca di sini). Jangan la marah-marah, Khalib. Hang tak terasa ka sehari dua hari ni Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor akan marah sakan kat hang?

Datuk Seri Ahmad Farid Ridzuan khabarnya dah kena. Silap-silap giliaq hang pulak lepas ni. Ish, ish, ish....

Teringat pulak orang tempelak, "Who says Najib is losing grip? Cant you see Rosmah is so powerful? Damn powerful! You think she will allow that to happen? And don’t tell me Mahathir has a backbone to stand in her way."
