Najib to face storm over MACC death

By Bob Teoh (Sin Chew Daily)

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak flies home Monday after a five-day working visit to Saudi Arabia and is headed for a storm over the MACC mystery death in custody of Teoh Beng Hock.

Bernama reported from Jeddah Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, left the Royal Pavilion at the King Abdul Aziz International Airport, on board a special aircraft.

The visit was initially scheduled for four days but Najib extended it to accommodate his new schedule.

While abroad, Teoh Beng Hock, the political secretary to DAP’s Ean Yong Hian Wah assemblyman and state Exco member, fell to his death last Thursday (16 July) from the ninth floor of the building where the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is located in mysterious circumstances. When it was reporetd that Teoh was to be married the following day, suspicions over the death quickly surfaced. A cabinet minister suggested that it may be suicide and immedately got slammed by the public.

The MACC and Police are dragging their feet in responding to mounting public anger and this has only fuelled the outrage even more. A coalition of 17 civil society organisations immediately demanded a Royal Commission to probe the death.

By last Saturday (18 July), in Najib's absence, his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, was forced to say that the Cabinet may consider the call for a Royal probe at its forthcoming meeting for this week on Wednesday.

DAP parliamentry leader and MP for Ipoh Timor, Lim Kit Siang, immediately took him to task and demanded that the prime minister must immedaitely announced a Royal Commission upon his arrival tonight instead of waiting another two days. Teoh's family had already said they will no accept anything less than a Royal probe. Teoh was laid to rest today. Najib cannot avoid the storm. Najib has just recently completed his first 100 days as prime minister with a high approval rating. He must initiate a no-holds-barred inquiry as soon as his plane touches down tonight to save the credibility of the new government he leads. (By BOB TEOH, MySinchew)

Minum arak: Model dihukum 6 sebatan

Pendakwaan dilakukan Timbalan Pendakwa Syarie, Saiful Idham Sahimi.

"Mereka berulangkali memanggil saya Cina bodoh.

Ahli Parlimen DAP, Liew Chin Tong, berkata kematian Teoh mendedahkan "elemen jahat kerajaan BN pimpinan Umno".

Top advisers may quit MACC over Teoh’s death

By Debra Chong

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — With the public baying for blood over the mysterious death of political secretary Teoh Beng Hock, talk has been rife that the national anti-graft body's top advisers might quit or demand changes to interrogation procedures.

Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, who heads one of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) five advisory panels, confirmed today that several of his fellow advisers have indicated they may quit their appointed posts to protest the methods in which witnesses are questioned for information.

While he said none have openly declared they would step down for certain, the chief of the Panel on Consultation and Prevention of Corruption seemed to feel the rising heat and pressure from the public.

“Speaking for myself, I want to carry on,” Navaratnam told The Malaysian Insider when asked if he would step down in protest.

“No point in resigning. That's the easy way out. We've got a public trust to fulfil,” the former civil servant explained, stressing that the challenge was in taking accountability for something he had committed himself to.

Navaratnam said he fully backs the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the MACC, which is suspected to have had a hand in the death of Teoh.

The 30-year-old had been questioned for over eight hours straight by an MACC officer on a case of alleged fraud over state funds involving his boss, Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah.

The MACC said it released him at 3.45am on the day he was to get married. His body was found sprawled on the rooftop of the block beside the MACC's headquarters in Shah Alam at 1.30pm later that same day.

Navaratnam pointed out he was the first among the 42 people who were appointed early this year to oversee the fledgling MACC to publicly condemn the manner in which the officers carried out their job.

Six months ago when it was launched, the MACC enjoyed the full weight of public approval behind it as it took over the anti-graft fight from disgraced predecessor, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), although the personnel remained the same.

Today, the supposed giant of reform is reeling from the full weight of the public's fury.

Pegawai SPeRMa Bengap Ka...??? ~ malaysiakini

Bukan semua. Ini segelintir yang saya maksudkan.

Cuba bayangkan, apabila 'the real case' berada dihadapan mereka, apakah cara atau pendekatan yang mereka gunakan. Harimau yang lapar? Kucing kejar tikus ?

Anwar mahu KPN, Ketua Pesuruhjaya SPRM bertanggungjawab

ALOR GAJAH: Penasihat Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mahu Ketua Polis Negara, Tan Sri Musa Hassan dan Ketua Pesuruhjaya Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM), Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan bertanggungjawab atas kematian Setiausaha Politik Exco Selangor, Teoh Beng Hock.

Tentu kita masih ingat Dr Mahathir sewaktu beliau menjadi Perdana Menteri dahulupun menafikan pertemuan dengan pemimpin Israel kerana takut umat Islam marah. - Ustaz Idris Ahmad

PETALING JAYA: Teoh Beng Hock was last seen napping in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam hours before he was found dead on the fifth floor.

Teoh, the political secretary to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, had requested to sleep in the office for a while because he was feeling tired.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan said Teoh was no longer in their custody when he was found dead at 1.30pm on Thursday.

It is learnt that Teoh's handphone which his colleagues from the DAP had demanded from the Selangor MACC after the incident but appeared to be missing was handed over to police along with his other belongings by a MACC investigating officer who had earlier recorded a statement from the deceased on Friday. Faham dah kut maksudnya..... Mendiang Teoh Beng Hock TIDAK PERNAH dibebaskan pada bila-bila masa kerana segala barang milik mendiang masih berada dalam simpanan pegawai penyiasat SPRM. Ini kenyataan polis sendiri:

jadi isu mendiang 'minta berehat dan tidur di sofa HQ SPRM setelah dibebaskan' - jelas REKAAN SEMATA-MATA! Tanya saja kepada pegawai penyiasat SPRM, apa yang telah berlaku sebenarnya..... you bebaskan mendiang tapi you simpan barangan milik mendiang? S.O.P. apa yang you guna-pakai?

Teoh's handphone with police
by Charles Ramendran

Teoh Beng HockSHAH ALAM (July 19, 2009): The handphone of secretary Teoh Beng Hock whose body was found on Thursday at the state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters is in police possession and is being checked by investigators for clues in solving the case.

It is learnt that Teoh's handphone which his colleagues from the DAP had demanded from the Selangor MACC after the incident but appeared to be missing was handed over to police along with his other belongings by a MACC investigating officer who had earlier recorded a statement from the deceased on Friday.

Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed this but declined to elaborate.
Although the MACC had said that Teoh was merely a witness to the case and not a suspect, it did not say why they had taken away and kept his belongings including his handphone.

This evening, a police forensics team re-visited the Selangor MACC office and spent hours gathering more clues.

Police also have in their possession the video footages of CCTVs at the MACC office elevator area and the building carpark.

It is learnt that based on their early findings, investigators who have not ruled out foul play in the case though it has been classified as sudden death believe Teoh fell from the 14th floor as he had never left the office.

It is also learnt that police investigators from the Shah Alam district police headquarters are working round the clock to get to the bottom of the case and to date 27 people, mostly Selangor MACC personnel have been questioned between 8am and 6.30am daily since the incident.

Khalid Abu BakarMeanwhile, the federal Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said today the premises of the Selangor office at the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Section 9 was not fitted with close circuit TV (CCTV), as it was a temporary office.

MACC deputy commissioner Datuk Abu Kassim Mohammad said they were considering to fit CCTVs at the Selangor MACC two weeks ago after being advised by the commission's Complaints Committee, which is an independent body comprising five members led by a former Appeal Courts judge.

He said the committee had advised them following several incidents where witnesses who had given their testimonies in a case voluntarily had made allegations of doing so under duress due to pressure from interogations.

He said the commission's headquarters in several other states such as Negri Sembilan and Penang had CCTVs in their buildings.

Abu Kassim said this when asked why the Selangor MACC was not installed with CCTVs which would have helped in the probe in Teoh's death.

He said the Selangor MACC was waiting for its headquarters building in Section 16 also in Shah Alam to be built.

Abu Kassim said the federal MACC was also carrying out its own investigations into the incident which will be led by the commission's director of Professionalism and Excellence and the findings will be submitted to its Complaints Committee.

He said his personnel have been called in by police for questioning and are giving their full cooperation in the investigation.

Manek Urai : Umno riuh pasai tak sign borang 14

Umno bercadang nak buat bantahan kat mahkamah pilihanraya, pasai depa kata patutnya depa yang menang PRK Manek Urai. Depa kata SPR tersilap kira.

Malaysian Insder melaporkan

Bila PACA PAS mintak baru la depa pun sebuk kata nak jugak satu salinan. Tapi kali ni di PRK Manek Urai dah jadi terbalik pulak. Umno pulak riuh pasai PACA depa lupa nak mintak 'pengesahan' borang 14.

Jadinya beza majoriti 189+100-11=300. Ait!! Kalau, kalau guna terus undi BN tolak undi PAS, 1008-78=300. Chais!! Mengarut sungguh. Aku taktau sapa yang silap, Buat penat ja, sungguh² aku kira sambil tulis. Buang masa sungguh.

Jadinya, aku harap wartawan Mohd Zuharman berkenaan tolong check balik angka tu!!!

Hari tu cakap lain...hari ni siasat dah lain....apa cerita???

I am giving Tan Sri Musa Hassan 48 hours to announce that he will not seek another renewal of term as Inspector-General of Police and will give way to a current serving police officer or a Parliamentary and Civil Society Roundtable for a new IGP to create a safe Malaysia will be convened.

The reasons why the country needs a new IGP would have the support not only of the Malaysian public at large, but also the majority of the police personnel, and would include the following:

* Failure of Musa in Key Performance Indicators (KPI) as IGP in the past three years, in all the three core police functions to keep crime low, eradicate corruption and protect human rights. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that under Musa, Malaysians are even more unsafe from street crimes now than when he became IGP in September 5, 2006.
* The re-appointment of Musa for another term of IGP cast an adverse aspersion on all the senior police officers, as if there is not a single one out of the eight top police officers occupying key police positions below the post of IGP who are qualified or competent enough to become the new IGP to provide a new police leadership and culture to roll back the tide of crime in the past five years.

I am going one step further, and am asking the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to emulate his father, the second Prime Minister Tun Razak to appoint a new Inspector-General of Police still with four or five years of service brimming with ideas to plan out and implement police reforms instead of the current practice of appointing senior police officers left with one or two years’ service more interested about post-retirement arrangements.

Penang political aides want better protection

Special assistants to Penang government political leaders said today that they will only be available to attend any queries for graft investigations in their work premises and not anywhere else.

The decision was made by the 40 special assistants working for the Penang Pakatan Rakyat leaders following the sudden death of Teoh Beng Hock last Friday.

Teoh, 30, the political secretary to Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead after having been questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in relation to a probe into the spending of constituency funds.

His body was found on the fifth floor balcony of the building in which the MACC is housed in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Following this, the Penang special assistants have now taken the decision to protect themselves during any questioning by the MACC.

Penang executive council staff club acting chairperson Teh Lai Heng said that the state's special assistants may not cooperate with the MACC if the commission failed to bring those responsible for Teoh's death to face justice.

He also said that the MACC officers should guarantee the safety of special assistants during interrogations and questioning, adding that these special assistants should not be put under unwarranted intense pressure by the commission.

"We are just special assistants working for executive councillors. We should not be put under unnecessary stress," he told journalists after submitting a petition to the state MACC chief today.

"The length of investigation on Teoh was unreasonable (from 5pm to 3.45am)," said Teh, the special assistant to exco member Chow Kon Yeow.

Approval from their bosses a must

In the petition, the 40 special assistants said that they can be interviewed by the MACC in any corruption investigation in their working premises, which are the offices of executive councillors or assemblypersons.

They also insisted that they would only extend their cooperation to MACC after obtaining permission from their bosses.

Penang MACC director Latifah Md Yatim received the petition. She however declined to comment on it.

Also present at the press conference was the club's former chairperson Rezal Huzairi Md Zaki (right) who said the MACC should give an assurance that there is no repeat of the 'Teoh episode' if the agency wanted the fullest cooperation from special assistants.

"MACC should set up an independent or a royal commission to investigate Teoh's death.

"MACC cannot wash its hands off the tragedy," said Rezal Huzairi, who works under Deputy Chief Minister 1 Mansor Othman.

MACC probe: Prelude to Perak-style takeover?

Suspicion reigns over not just how Teoh Beng Hock died, but also the basis of the corruption probe into alleged misappropriation of state funds by 12 Selangor Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons.

To DAP national assistant treasurer Nga Kor Ming, the bigger picture appears to be a prelude to the toppling of another Pakatan state government after Perak.

He said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) began its investigations against seven Chinese representatives, followed by five Malays, on alleged falsification of claims.

“Now it is saying that it will investigate all 36 Pakatan representatives in Selangor including Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim,” said Nga, who is also DAP Perak secretary.

“This is an indication that BN is setting its sight on taking control of Selangor as it did in Perak. In Perak, the MACC first zoomed on the Behrang and Changat Jering assemblypersons for alleged corruption and then BN moved in to take control of the state.”

Selangor has 56 state seats of which 20 are held by BN. Under the Pakatan coalition, the DAP holds 13 seats, PKR has 15 and PAS has 8.

The MACC probe started with Teresa Kok (Kinrara), Ean Yong Hian Wah (Sri Kembangan), Dr Cheah Wing Yin (Damansara Utama), Elizabeth Wong (Bukit Lanjan), Hannah Yeoh (Subang Jaya), Lau Weng San (Kampung Tunku) and Edward Lee (Bukit Gasing).

Teoh (left), the political secretary to Ean Yong, was found dead last Friday after having been picked up for questioning the day before. His body was found on the fifth floor balcony of the building where the Selangor MACC is housed.

Nga, who said he suspects that the MACC is fishing for evidence to book all 12, queried why the commission is concentrating only on Pakatan-controlled states.

“There are several multi-million ringgit corruption scandals that need to be urgently investigated but MACC prefers to drag its feet in such matters,” he added.

“This raises great concern over the integrity of MACC (as to whether it is) carrying out its duties in a professional manner. No one trusts MACC any more. It has failed to discharge its duty without fear or favour.

“We have reason to believe that MACC has been used as a tool to persecute Pakatan states. We urge it to remain neutral.”

"Stay" sought on sodomy-trial documents

The prosecution in Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial is urgently seeking a 'stay' order against having to surrender copies of video recordings, documents and the medical report to defence lawyers.

Last Thursday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court had ordered the prosecution to make the documents available to Anwar, within seven days.

The next day, the prosecution filed a notice of appeal against Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah's ruling.

About 2pm today, the prosecution filed its 'stay' application at the High Court criminal registry.
The document was signed by DPP Nordin Hassan, one of the six-member prosecution team led by Solicitor-General II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden.

Anwar's lawyer, Sankara Nair (right), confirmed that he had received a copy of the application, and that a certificate of urgency had been filed along with it.

No date has been fixed to hear the application, but Sankara said that an affidavit-in-reply would be filed.

Cross-appeal filed

Anwar, 62, is charged with sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 24, at a condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26, last year.

In his ruling last week, Zabidin ordered the prosecution to allow Anwar's lawyers to inspect CCTV recordings of the alleged scene of the offence, if the copy provided is not clear.

The footage is of the guardhouse and lifts to Block 11 of the Desa Damansara condominium and other locations within the complex.

He further ordered that the medical examination notes of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital doctors on Mohd Saiful should be handed to the defence team.

Anwar has since filed a cross-appeal against Zabidin's decision not to allow him to receive the original DNA specimens, because the samples have been packed and sealed.

Teoh mati 4-5 jam sebelum ditemui

Pasca Manek Urai : UMNO Hilang Banyak Talian Hayat

Murahnya nyawa rakyat Malaysia.

- Dang Mamamat

Kematian Teoh, Najib Harus Dipertanggungjawabkan

Pengerusi SPRM Tan Sri Abdul Aziz mesti dipertanggungjawabkan," kata Anwar.

"Kita lihat perlanggaran peraturan, penderaaan rakyat, dimana SPRM diperalatkan oleh penguasa. Kita harus ambil tindakan yang tegas. Ini membabitkan kematian, tidak termasuk kezaliman-kezaliman lain. Najib mesti dipertanggungjawabkan," tambah Anwar.

Kes 'puaka' UM: Mahkamah tolak lanjut reman presiden PMI

Teoh: Gambar Sekitar Perhimpunan Rakyat MPSJ

"Hutang Ceti Pun Tak Pe..!"

"Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia..!"

Tepuk dada tanya selera..!
Safety 1st..! elakkan jangkitan wabak H1N1...

UMNO keluar duit juta juta, Bank Kuala Krai tutup sementara

BO

Malaysia no longer a "Tanah Melayu"

Azly Rahman
http://azlyrahman-illuminations.blogspot.com/2009/07/rest-in-peace-beng-hock.html

Today is July 19, 2009, 40 years after the May 13 1969 tragedy.

I dedicate these notes to Teo Beng Hock, a young Malaysian who ought to be an inspiration to many wishing to call Malaysia home.

Because we have agreed to become a country rooted in a social contract that ought to give equality, equity, and equal opportunity to all who have given up their natural rights in exchange for "citizenship" and the rights of the State to tax them (with or without representation), we must recognize that Malaysia is for Malaysians.

This will be the most humane perspective we ought to work towards in holding. What is needed is a system of check and balance that will ensure that each generation of Malaysians will progress without the trappings of mistrust, hatred, and institutionalized racism.

But first, we must all fight for the installation of this reality. Political will that will move this agenda of ethical liberalism must be harnessed and be made the driving force for social, cultural, educational, and psychological change.

The idea of "Tanah Melayu" must be reflected upon -- of its relevancy and whether it is a kind of ideological thinking that will help develop a culture of peace or help nurture inter-racial hatred.

Communal politics is an old school thinking that cannot survive the wave of cosmopolitanism; just like the any idea that could not survive the inevitability of historical change propelled by changes in material condition and consciousness.

In Malaysia, the days of communal politics are numbered, however well it is packaged and propagandized. Multiculturalism, and in fact radical multiculturalism, or better still radical marhaenism is the next wave. Institutions that promote racism must be deconstructed and abolished; institutions that are funded by the ruling regime to ensure the hegemony of this or that race. Dismantle them before they become yet another layer of complexity in our consciousness; a layer that hides the structural violence inherent in a system of racism and false consciousness called "nationalistic history".

The only permanent thing is change, as the Chinese philosopher and mystic Lao Tzu said. Man has no nature, what he has is history, said the Spanish philosopher Ortega Gasset.

And there will be beauty in this change if we know how to destroy the beast within.

I am reproducing an essay I wrote sometime ago on "Ketuanan Melayu"

--------------------------------------------------------

A Malay view of 'Ketuanan Melayu'
Azly Rahman | Feb 4, 08 2:51pm

‘O people! Your God is one and your forefather (Adam) is one. An Arab is not better than a non-Arab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a red (i.e. white tinged with red) person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a red person, except in piety. Indeed the noblest among you is the one who is deeply conscious of God.’ - a saying of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him)

‘Malaysia - to whom does it belong? To Malaysians. But who are Malaysians? I hope I am, Mr Speaker, Sir. But sometimes, sitting in this chamber, I doubt whether I am allowed to be a Malaysian. This is the doubt that hangs over many minds, and ... [once] emotions are set in motion, and men pitted against men along these unspoken lines, you will have the kind of warfare that will split the nation from top to bottom and undo Malaysia.’ - Lee Kuan Yew, now Senior Minister, Republic of Singapore

Instead of defining Ketuanan Melayu as ‘Malay superiority’ which is quite meaningless, philologically inaccurate, and philosophically arrogant, I think the word ‘dictatorship’ is closer in meaning. As you read this piece, please refrain from value judgment and from bring trapped in the prison-house of language pertaining to the word ‘dictatorship’.

To dictate connotes to tell, which connotes to narrate. To narrate means to weave a story based on an ideology. To ideologise means to encapsulate. To encapsulate means to be trap. Dictatorship, here might also mean an entrapment. Instead of acknowledging one's freedom to rule, one is acknowledging being in an entrapment - and to rule out of that condition. This is a form of false consciousness.

Words, as a literary theorist Raymond Williams might say, must also be contextualised/situated within the economic condition they emerge in. Marx's famous dictum that human beings' existence is defined by the economic condition they are in and that this condition is already predetermined. This is a deterministic view of human history.

I first read heard the phrase Ketuanan Melayu in the mid-1980s from a book by one Malik Munip. I was reading his work, at the same time reading Lim Kit Siang's ‘Malaysia in the dangerous 80s’, to get a sense of the argument. I was an undergraduate reading Literature, Education and International Politics.

I also heard that Malay students were discouraged from reading Kit Siang's work and encouraged to read ‘Ketuanan Melayu’. I love banned books and books that others tell me not to read. There is a sense of intellectual challenge to be able to read banned books.

I read Mahathir Mohamad's ‘The Malay Dilemma’ and Syed Husin Ali's ‘Malays: Their Problems and their Future’ and Syed Hussein Alatas’ ‘The Myth of the Lazy Native’ at the same time. Again, to get a sense of balance.

I read Malaysian official publications on economic outlook, juxtaposing them with a close reading of analyses on the political-economy of the Malaysian capitalist state.

I read the work of Freud and Marx to see where some of the major authors of the Frankfurt School of Social Research are going with their arguments on totalitarianism. I read the Quran and the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata to see where the arguments on race superiority lie and what the fate of humankind will be.

The idea of social dominance and racial superiority might all be primarily about economics, if we are to read the history of the development of ideologies of superiority. But my question is - who has the right to claim that this or that land belongs to this or that group of people. At what point does culture and citizenship meet and negotiate the issue of egalitarianism? When does ‘the truth of one's culture’ reach its limit and the question of ‘the truth of citizenship’ dominate?

This is a very complex question Malaysians must answer after 50 years of Independence. We must open up the dialogue on this issue.

Lyrical propaganda

Let us look at how the idea of ketuanan Melayu is disseminated to the young. One way is through indoctrination camps in which songs are used.

Over the decades, perhaps millions of Malay students like me were taught the dangerous propaganda song, ‘Anak Kecil Main Api’(A Child Plays with Fire). One verse concerns the power of the Malays::

… kini kita cuma tinggal kuasa

yang akan menentukan bangsa

hasil mengalir, ke tangan yang lain

pribumi merintih sendiri…

My loose translation of this 1980s propaganda song by the Biro Tata Negara reads:

… political power is what we are only left with

one that will determine the fate of our nation

wealth of this nation flows into the hands of others

sons and daughters of the soil suffer in solace...

I do not think we have a clear understanding of what the lyrics mean. I doubt if the songwriter even understand what a 'people's history of Malaya' means. It is a song based on racist intents; its lyrics penned by one who does not have a good grasp of the political-economy of Malaysian history, let alone the latest advances in the field of psychology of consciousness.

The training programes that encapsulate the theme of this song are meant to instill fear of the Malays, not of others but of themselves, and to project hatred onto other ethnic groups without realising who the enemy of the Malays really are.

Using relaxation techniques to bring the brain waves in the alpha and state (conducive for suggestive and subliminal messages), trainees were put under ‘half-asleep’ conditions to get the ketuanan Melayu message to colonise the consciousness. The technique pioneered by Russian brain scientists Barzakov and Lozanov in the1970s, called ‘suggestopedia’, is used to instill the deep sense of fear for oneself and hatred of others.

History is a complex syntagmatic pattern of interplay between technology, ideology, culture, inscription and institutionalisation not easily reduced to simplistic lyrics as such sung to the tune of pre-war German-nationalistic-sounding compositions.

History is about the complex evolution of the ruling class which owns the technologies of control. As Marx would say, at every epoch it is the history of those who own the means of production that will be written and rewritten. The winners write history, the losers write poetry or study anthropology, some would lament.

Back to the lyrics. After 50 years of independence, who is suffering in Malaysia? Who has become wealthy? Who has evolved into robber barons? What has become of our judiciary system, our universities, our city streets, our sense of public safety and security, our schools, our youth, and our entire socio-economic arrangements at the eve of the 12th general election. How has the idea of ketuanan Melayu contributed to this state of affairs?

Language of power and ideology is at play in those lyrics. The definition of ‘bumiputera' is at play. It has become a problematic word in this age of deconstructionism; an age wherein as the poet WB Yeats said, "the centre cannot hold".

Rock musicians will recall the Scorpions' famous song 'Winds of Change' to serenade the fall of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the breakdown of the Soviet Empire. We have to face the 'wrath' of the word.

Put an end to Ketuanan Melayu

For Muslims in Malaysia, this saying by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is familiar: ‘Your descent is nothing to be proud of. Nor does it bring you superiority. O people! All of you are the children of Adam. You are like equal wheat grains in a bowl ... No one has any superiority over anyone else, except in religion and heedfulness. In order to consider someone a wicked person, it suffices that he humiliates other people, is mean with money, bad-tempered and exceeds the limits…’

I would say that ketuanan Melayu is a dangerous concept that is threatening race relations. It is an arrogant interpretation of selective history; of a history that is largely benefiting those who profits from the ideology.

Those promoting this concept are not well-versed in the matters of philosophy of history. I do not think thinking Malays these days subscribe to the idea of ‘Malay dominance and dictatorship’. If there is a ketuanan of one race, then the rest are ‘slaves’ and ‘serfs’ and ‘sub-citizens’, if we are to analyse it from the point of view of ‘Master-Slave’ narrative?

As a Malay wishing to see the withering of and an end to the concept of ketuanan Melayu and the birth of a new consciousness that will respect the dignity of all races and the humility of all ethnic groups, I call upon Malaysians to continue to be critical of any attempt by any race to project their own sense of false superiority that would only breed dangerous ethnocentrism bordering on xenophobia.

We should work together to deconstruct all forms of race-based political arrangement and work towards establishing a new order based on a more egalitarian economic design that takes into consideration the basic needs and dignity of all races.

We should teach our schoolchildren how to deconstruct such sense of racial superiority, through the teaching of not only tolerance but social egalitarianism - via peace education strategies. We will have a lot to gain for generations to come.

27 Rejab : Peristiwa Isra' Mikraj, adakah kita semua mengambil pengajarannya?

Dari Laman Nurani

27 Rejab : Peristiwa Isra' Mikraj, adakah kita semua mengambil pengajarannya?

Teoh’s death: Mysteries abound, RCI without delay

By Kim Quek

Teoh Beng Hock’s tragic death seems to have jolted this country from the euphoric daze induced by the media blitz that has glorified Najib Razak’s premiership. Staring starkly at the people now is the image of a rotten state of depraved institutions, of which the obnoxious Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) represents but the tip of the iceberg.

This rotten state was mercilessly exposed during the entire infamy known as the Perak power grab where none of the government institutions were spared from political manipulations to engage in unconstitutional and unlawful activities to satiate UMNO’s obsession to seize and preserve power at all costs.

In this context, none should be so na├»ve as not to recognise that Teoh is the victim of political persecution, the latest in a series of hardly concealed acts of subversion and sabotage against Pakatan Rakyat (PR) since the Mar 8, 2008 election exposed UMNO’s precarious political future. In the present incident, MACC is in the midst of an operation to destabilise the Pakatan-controlled Selangor state government through endeavours to prosecute PR assemblymen, for which it has been busy fabricating the necessary evidence through threats and coercion of potential witnesses. And Teoh Beng Hock is clearly a victim of physical intimidation and mental torture under such a process.

That this was the case was indicated by Kajang municipal councilor and businessman Tan Boon Wah, who was interrogated at the same time (though separately) as Teoh Beng Hock was interrogated (both of them were called in as witnesses, not suspects). Tan described in graphic details how he was physically abused and mentally tortured to falsely admit (which he refused) that he did not supply the 1,500 flags at the price of RM 2,400 to the constituency (Seri Kembangan) of assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah (whose political secretary was Teoh Beng Hock), implying that Ean Yong had corruptly pocketed the money. Teoh Beng Hock was understood to have been worked on to yield the result against Ean Yong.

Tan Boon Wah also disclosed racial insults thrown at him during the interrogation, thus reinforcing an earlier allegation of racially biased persecution as all the seven assemblymen presently under investigation by MACC for suspicion of misappropriation of state allocations are ethnic Chinese. This view was further collaborated by Dariff Din (a Malay assistant to assemblyman Lau Weng San), who was also interrogated at the same time as Teoh and Tan. Dariff said the interrogators were obsessed with his racial identity as he looked like a Chinese; and spent the bulk of the interrogation time just to make sure that he was as claimed – a Malay. Dariff said: “everything went smoothly after they learned that I was a Malay Muslim”. He added that from what he observed, MACC was merely “fishing for evidence against Pakatan assemblymen” without any specific clue of corruption.

Against such background, the various authorities’ calls to the public not to hurl accusations but to trust the police to conduct a “professional and thorough” investigation is taken by many as an insult to their intelligence, as if the public is unaware that these two law enforcers - MACC and police - have long been perceived as routinely playing a game of “you scratch my back, I scratch yours”, the latest being the MACC’s recent exoneration of the Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan of alleged fabrication of evidence in the Anwar “black eye” probe, despite the presentation of incontrovertible evidence to the contrary by Anwar Ibrahim. So, can anyone be blamed for being skeptical, thinking that it is now pay-back time for the police to return MACC the favour?

SERIOUS DOUBTS

Now that the police has said the initial pathologists’ report indicated Teoh died of injury due to a fall from a high place, the mystery is zeroed in on the circumstances surrounding Teoh’s fall from the building. It is here that serious doubts have surfaced over MACC’s version of what happened to Teoh.

Issue 1: Was Teoh ever released by MACC?

MACC chief commissioner Said Hamdan has disclaimed responsibility for Teoh’s death on the ground that Teoh was released before he met his death.

His director of investigations Shukri Abdul had earlier claimed that Teoh was released at 3:30 am on July 16, and was last seen at 6 am sleeping on a couch in the MACC office after been given permission to rest there. The next MACC heard of Teoh was when a cleaner in the building shouted that he discovered a body lying on the 5th storey balcony of the building (Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam) where Teoh was interrogated on the 14th floor.

This story implies that Teoh walked out of the office on his own without being seen, sometime after 6 am. But Teoh couldn’t have done that as he did not have the electronic card to open the door to either leave or enter the office.

If Teoh was released, surely his handphone must have been returned to him. How come his handphone was not with him when his body was found?

Besides, there was no credibility that Teoh had chosen to linger in the same office where he must have been subjected to many hours of traumatic roughing-up in the hands of the interrogators. Any reasonable person would have rushed home at the first instance to escape the dreadful place, considering that his car was conveniently parked in the same building and that he was scheduled to register his marriage with his loved one on the same day.

If indeed Teoh was in custody all the time, why should MACC have concealed this fact if it did no wrong to cause Teoh’s death?

Issue 2: What happened between 1:30 pm and 5:00 pm?

Though Teoh’s body was discovered at 1:30, it was not until after 5 pm that MACC disclosed the news to assemblymen Ean Yong and Ronnie Liu who had been waiting for over an hour in the MACC office insisting to meet Teoh Beng Hock. Why should MACC have hidden the news for so long unless there were compelling reasons which in all probability might not be guilt-free?

Issue 3: Why was the outer timber door of the MACC office unprecedentedly closed for some half an hour at the time when someone discovered Teoh’s body?

The Chinese section of Malaysiakini.com reported on July 17 that its reporter Rahmah Ghazali observed an inexplicable happening at the MACC office at the 14th floor, where the outer timber door was mysteriously shut between 1:15 pm and 1:35 pm, and re-opened shortly before 1:50 pm on July 16.

Rahmah explained that she first arrived at the MACC’s 14th floor office at 1:15 to attend a press conference to be given by assemblyman Lau Weng San. Seeing that no one was around, she went down to the 4th floor to wait at the reception hall. When other reporters arrived at 1:30, she followed them to the 14th floor again, but was surprised to find the outer timber door of the MACC office closed; it was then about 1:35. Thinking that the staff could have closed the door to go for lunch, she and other reporters went down for food. She then called Lau Weng San who expressed disbelief that the timber door was closed, as MACC was supposed to operate around the clock. Knowing that Lau was already on the way, she decided to skip lunch and went back to 14th floor, and found the timber door re-opened this time; the time was about 1:50. Lau arrived at 2 pm. After talking to reporters for about 20 minutes outside the MACC office, he went in to make a report. Of course, none of them knew that Teoh Beng Hock was already dead then.

1:30 was the time when someone discovered Teoh’s body. Why did MACC take the unprecedented step to shut down the office briefly, closing the door between 1:15 and 1:35, and re-opening the door shortly before 1:50? What did the staff do behind that timber door at that crucial moment that they would not want outsiders to see? The mystery seems to deepen.

ROYAL COMMISSION THE ONLY OPTION

In summary, it is apparent that MACC is holding far too many secrets that it has not shared with the public over this tragedy, which is aptly defined by Lim Kit Siang as “how a healthy, vibrant and idealistic young political worker could enter the MACC hqrs as a witness in its investigation only to end up as a corpse in a plunge from the 14th floor of the building”.

Entrusting the full responsibility on any of the existing law-enforcing agencies to unlock these secrets would not do, as none enjoys public confidence.

There is no option but to appoint a royal commission of inquiry comprised of competent individuals whom the public trusts to handle the present mess, if Najib does not want the mistrust of his leadership to deepen. And not a minute is to be wasted for this commission to spring into action, if vital clues needed to establish the truth is not to be lost for ever.

Tribute to Teoh

The nation is in severe pain as we follow news of the tragic death of Teoh Beng Hock, who reportedly fell from the building that houses the Selangor headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in Shah Alam.

We don't know him, his family or his colleagues. But we have shed tears as we watched and read the horrible news. These tears were shed because we are ashamed of our government; a government that cannot even deliver its basic duty to deliverg safety and security to its citizens.

teo beng hock plaza masalam macc 170709Teoh, barely 30, could have had a promising future, but his life has come to an abrupt stop. This young person must have had a sense of mission, for he did not choose the comfort of an easier career. Instead, he dedicated himself to the 'thankless' life of public service in Malaysia.

The job itself is challenging enough; daily we watched these young political secretaries go about their chores of supporting and assisting their elected representatives operating on a 7/11 schedule for very modest compensation.

Daily they have to navigate the hassle-filled terrain of the government bureaucracy, often having to put up with bullying and abuse by hostile parties. There is also the need for fire-fighting and to put up with endless eruptions of political emergencies.

Their tenacity and patience are tested, challenged and stretched every minute of the day. Through their work, they serve and strive all for a better Malaysia, for you and me.

In a 'civilised society' like ours, who would have thought that the job of serving the public would come with such a high price? Teoh's parents expressed regret that they allowed their son to go into public service, a sentiment we can all appreciate because no one would want to expose our children to risk.

Evict bad governance

But what happened to Teoh is most unnecessary, unfair and unjust. There is no reason for this to have happened.

teoh beng hock plaza masalam macc sprm 170709 brother clutching fiancee 02Now that the hopes of a pair of parents and a pregnant fiancee are shattered by Teoh's mysterious death, do we not owe this family? Our system could not even give him basic protection.

Can we let him die in vain? He was sacrificed while working to move the nation's democratic system forward. When no more talented young people want to enter public service, how can we sustain a fair political system for our economic, social and cultural lives to continue?

When parents prevent their children from participating in governance to ensure a fair system, how will you and I be protected from foul play and injustice?

When the system is allowed to rot, our well being will be sacrificed. Your property will have no value; your job will not pay well if you still have one; the streets will not be safe and schools will be in shambles.

All this is already happening. We need to evict bad governance - the authorities must stop terrorising the nation.

They had better have some good answers for his family, and especially for that baby to be born in a few months.

Why are law-enforcement officials incapable of protecting a young person who was just called in for questioning to assist in an investigation?

What makes up the values of the government of the day? Is it capable of fair play and what does it make of the current state of governance? It appears that we have a government that is itself the source of problems.

Pahlawan Volunteers feels duty-bound to initiate a public campaign, so this is a call to you to make this a better Malaysia for all.

Dear Malaysians, you and I were ashamed that the nation was silent when a young Mongolian was blown to pieces. We fail to demonstrate to the international community that we could assure foreigners their safety while on our soil.

Today, we have failed to protect our own son - we failed to assure him safety in government-operated premises!

Let's vow to demand a safe system, now that Teoh has paid for this with his life.
